The region near the anus is prone to diseases. One such disease is piles. One can prevent themselves from further damage when they know the symptoms and causes of piles.
What is piles?
Piles is a condition characterised by swollen veins in the anus and rectum. Piles are also known as haemorrhoids.
The veins near the lowest part of the rectum and anus are called hemorrhoidal veins. Sometimes these veins become irritated by the passage of bowel movements. As a result they become stretched and thin.
They are 2 types of haemorrhoids:
- Internal haemorrhoids
- External haemorrhoids
Internal hemorrhoids: Internal hemorrhoids are present inside the rectum. A person having internal hemorrhoids usually won’t experience any pain since there are few pain-sensing nerves in the rectum. Its presence can only be felt when a person starts bleeding. Sometimes these hemorrhoids may fall out of their place. If so you will see pink pads of skin that are pinker than the surrounding area. The hemorrhoids that fall may cause pain since they become irritated by rubbing when you sit or when a cloth touches them.
External hemorrhoids: The external hemorrhoids are present within the anus. When the external hemorrhoids fall out, you will experience pain. Blood clots might form in the fallen out hemorrhoids, this condition is called thrombosis. Thrombosed haemorrhoids appear in purple or blue color. Generally they are not serious, however if the pain becomes unbearable you can visit the doctor.

What causes hemorrhoids?
When people pass bowel movements it involves some pressure. Due to this pressure, the veins around the anus may bulge or swell. The factors that cause increased pressure are as follows:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Low-fiber diet
- Anal intercourse
As you grow old the veins that support the rectum and anus weaken, hence people are more prone to piles in their old age.
What happens if you ignore piles?
When people have piles, they should get it treated immediately. Piles when left untreated might lead to the following complications:
- Infection: The people suffering from piles might develop infection if left untreated.
- Anemia: Due to loss of blood while passing stools, the people having piles can suffer from anemia eventually.
- Gangrene: If piles is not treated immediately, the tissues in the piles and nearby skin will die due to lack of blood supply.
- Faecal incontinence: If piles is not treated immediately, you might lose voluntary control over your bowel movements.
