What is cancer?

Generally old cells are replaced by new cells. Sometimes problems occur in this process. New cells grow when they are not required and the old cells do not die. This mass of abnormal cells is known as tumor. The tumor can be benign or malignant in form. Benign tumors are not cancerous whereas malignant tumors are cancerous in form.

Malignant tumors are more dangerous because they can enter the blood stream destroying a healthy tissue in the process. When cancer spreads to the other parts of the body from its primary site, it’s called metastasis.

What are the causes of cancer?

Cancer is caused due to various reasons. The causes of cancer are as follows:

  1. Variations in the genes: Oncogene is a type of gene that tells the cells when to divide and tumor suppressor genes tell the cells when not to divide. Cancer obstructs the functions of the oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.
  2. Family history: When there is a fault in the genes, it can lead to cancer.
  3. Carcinogens: Carcinogens are cancer causing agents. The cancer causing agents are tobacco, asbestos, arsenic, the sun, compounds in car exhaust fumes etc. When bodies are exposed to these materials, free radicals are formed in the body. These free radicals damage the cells, this leads to cancer.
  4. Other factors: As people age the DNA undergoes various changes, this can cause cancer. Viruses like human papillomavirus, hepatitis B and C and Epstein-Barr virus can cause cancers. Diseases that weaken the immune system can cause cancers.
