Pregnancy is a delicate phase in a woman’s life. Adequate care is essential in this phase. Ultrasound scan is one such technology that keeps a check on your baby’s health.

“ You are pregnant!” When your doctor says this to you, you get a great feeling of joy. You are very happy. In a few months you  will have a small angel in your hands. The person who is bringing that angel in this world is you.

Baby should be monitored right from its initial stages of development. This is required to find out important information about your baby.

ULTRASOUND SCAN
One medical test that can give important information about your baby is Ultrasound scan.

Ultrasound scan uses sound waves to build a visual image about baby, placenta, uterus and pelvic organs. Ultrasound scan is a non-invasive procedure i.e. it does not involve needles or injections.

PROCEDURE
Your sonographer will apply ultrasound gel on your tummy. The gel ensures good contact between the machine and your skin. Next, your sonographer will place a handheld device called probe over your skin. This probe will send ultrasound waves and it will pick them once they bounce back. When your sonographer places the probe on your tummy, a white and black imagery will appear on the computer screen that will show your baby. Your sonographer might have to apply slight pressure to get best views of the baby. Usually an ultrasound scan will take 20 minutes.

What can you find out from an ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan can offer you a wide range of details. You will require an ultrasound scan at 6 to 9 weeks to check the following details:

  • Miscarriage
  • Ectopic or molar pregnancy
  • Uncertain gestational period
  • Multiple gestation

An ultrasound scan between 18-21 weeks is necessary to:

  • Monitor the baby’s heartbeat
  • Measure baby’s size
  • Check the location of placenta
  • Detect the amount of amniotic fluid in the uterus
  • Check the baby for physical abnormalities
  • Try to determine the baby’s sex

You might require an ultrasound scan in your third trimester to:

  • Check baby’s growth
  • Check the level of amniotic fluid
  • Determine whether you need a cesarean section
  • Determine the cause of vaginal bleeding

You should get an ultrasound scan done at good hospitals. Sonographers in good hospitals can detect abnormalities up to 80% of the time, while in clinics the detection rate can drop to 13%.

If your ultrasound scan shows a problem, don’t panic. You will need to take a second opinion. After that if the problem is present for sure, your doctor will do the best to relieve you of your problem. Many problems can be cured while your baby is still in your womb.
